Although the coaching process varies, it unfolds similarly regardless of the topic or kind of client. If we highlight the area with the most specificity, it would undoubtedly be executive coaching (coaching for managers and CEOs).
Executive coaches do not work exclusively with people in high managerial and leadership positions. But, clients on executive coaching are usually like that: highly professional, successful in their jobs, leaders of teams of many people, with significant responsibilities, with a lot of obligations, a working day that doesn’t stop when others do, with challenges that they often can share with no one, with problems they have to solve themselves.
Executive coaching is the most demanding type, so it requires special coaching skills. Undoubtedly, a coach with any professional background could help a person in a managerial position to see himself more clearly, encourage the development of his potential, develop emotional intelligence and leadership skills, and give feedback. Often, more is needed. The coach must distinguish whether his client is a “problem manager” or a “manager with a problem”.
For clients in the first group, any coach would help them progress. However, for the second group, the coach must have extensive knowledge of psychology and vast experience because that “problem” most often lies in the deeper psychological foundations of the personality and requires a lot of understanding of the job itself. Understanding that even psychotherapy is not the happiest solution for such managers is essential.
Psychotherapy of one of the psychodynamic directions, such as psychoanalysis, would be helpful in this case. Still, it requires a lot of time, and often, the client gets the impression that his problem is dissipating. That is why an executive coach is the best solution to bridge this gap: he focuses on the issue and the solution to the problem, does not ignore the psychological basis of the problem, but through interactive work processes and solves it in the long run.
We offer you a solution for every type of executive coaching challenge.
